Terramare to build Vuosaari’s new fairway
The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, Port of Helsinki and City of Helsinki are undertaking a joint project to deepen the Vuosaari fairway.
Construction work will begin in June 2020. The new, deeper fairway will be opened to traffic at the end of 2021. The project contract was signed with Terramare Oy on 18 May 2020 and the investment is valued at more than EUR 30 million.
The vessel used to dimension the new fairway is a container ship 280 metres long and 33 metres wide with a draught of 13 metres and a TEU capacity of 5,000. The deepening of the fairway will almost double the loading capacity of cargo vessels, which will generate significant cost savings and reduce the environmental impacts of vessel traffic.
The Vuosaari fairway and part of the harbour area will be deepened from a draught of 11 metres to 13 metres. The contractor will deliver their equipment to Vuosaari in mid-June to begin the excavation work. The extracted rock will be used as filler in the construction of a new residential area in Hernesaari and Melkinlaituri.
“A total of about 1 million cubic metres of soft land mass will be removed from the harbour basin and fairway. An estimated 0.25–0.3 million cubic metres of solid rock and 0.8 million cubic metres of blasted stone will also be generated,” says Tero Sievänen, a planning engineer at the Port of Helsinki.
